
Popped by the Daylife HQ this evening to listen to Jeff Jarvis give his much-hyped (or hated) Google schpeel and rather enjoyed myself. The q-and-a crowd had lots of disdain for what they perceived to be (if not “evil”) non-transparent behavior on the part of the search juggernaut. It’s a fair criticism, but Jarvis is fairly clear in explaining that he’s using Google as a mechanism for telling a story about a new business philosophy and approach to the curating and consumption of information. I feel a bit sorry for him when I think about the countless instances in which he’ll have to eat thoughtful minutes while defusing that obvious timesuck of a question from his audiences as he promotes the book. The conversation, like most conversations about the future of news, is probably more stimulating in the company of open-source techies than the remnants of the publishing industry. I started it on the subway and will have more thoughts after reading over the weekend.

In a tidbit of related news, it looks like I will resume my column in Editor & Publisher this month after going on post-election hiatus for a bit to regain my sanity. Looking forward to it!
