Celebrate Inauguration With Service

The more deeply entrenched in Washington Barack Obama becomes over the coming days, weeks and years will surely change him. There will be power plays to make, predicaments to solve and decisions to be disagreed upon. I’ve already witnessed this transformation happen at lightening speed, from a Hope Monger in Iowa’s high school gyms to the man who’ll be sworn in before millions as president next Tuesday. I’m sure many of us will be disappointed with him at times, but one thing I have confidence in, however, is that he will always strive to remain committed to the principles that compelled him to bring this complicated responsibility upon himself. That he will prioritize the interests of mere mortals in his agenda.

The big push to encourage supporters to volunteer at USA Service that’s happening this week is a reassuring and inspiring thing. I’ve signed up with some friends who will also be traveling to DC to do some volunteer work with veterans families in Logan Circle on Monday. I will be one of the lucky people who gets to experience all the big exciting events firsthand, and for that I feel incredibly blessed. What’s more awe-inspiring, though, is the knowledge that just like on election night, when groups of people were gathered on street corners across America cheering emphatically, it doesn’t matter where you celebrate: We’re all moving on together.
